This is a guest post from Teresa (Brent's wife). I wanted to give a somewhat unbiased opinion of what I believe this method has done for my husband's life.

When I first met Brent almost 30 years ago, he had just "retired" from hockey, but was still Ukrainian dancing. Coming from a small BC town, I had never seen this type of dance before. The first solo I saw Brent do was the "split leap" - very impressive to a young woman already falling in love. In all that he did, Brent seemed to move with a grace and ease that I, as a definite non-athlete, did not. In fact, my one and only time on a balance beam had resulted in torn ligaments and crutches.

Skip ahead a few years... we were married and starting our lives together. Brent was no longer moving with the same grace and ease. He would put his back out with the slightest of movements (one day, he bent down to pet our dog and ended up having to crawl to the couch in pain. I believe he stayed there for at least a week.). He stopped doing the things he loved, like water-skiing, skiing, and running. Or, if he convinced his body he could do one of these things, he would then be in pain for the next few days.

Visits to the chiropractor and physio-therapist were helpful and numerous. Brent had lots of sick days away from his teaching job, simply because he couldn't move without pain.

Throughout all these years, he would dabble with the Feldenkrais method that he had first been introduced to in a university dance class (it's a good story; ask him about it one day). He took a leave to stay home with our children and to determine his next career step. Feldenkrais again kept coming to his mind, but he knew that it would be a long road of education and practise.

The defining moment came on a cruise with my family to Alaska. He came back to our room with a look of determination on his face, and stated, "I just helped an elderly man get off the floor with ease. I have to do this, Teresa." That was in 2009 - he studied for four years, travelling back and forth to Oregon. In October 2016, he opened the Okanagan Feldenkrais Studio here in Vernon.

It's been a long road of discovery, learning, and challenges. This is not a well-known method, nor is it easily explained in 30 words or less (point - this was meant to be a very short post).

While camping this week, Brent decided he would like to try and do a 360 degree turn on the kneeboard behind our boat - and he did it! At 51, he moves with such ease, grace, and purpose, that he reminds me of the young man I met in university. Gone are the days he moved with caution, hoping not to hurt himself.
